Identity Theft Prevention
What can you do to prevent identity theft?

This page has two videos that you should watch.  The first one is about how these criminals obtain your information and the next video gives specific tips and techniques you can use to protect yourself.

The best way to fight identity theft is to prevent it from ever happening in the first place.  Many people think it won't happen to them but identity theft can happen to anyone.  Even if it's not an extreme case it can still make life difficult for you.  Learning to be careful with your personal information can save you big money and big headaches.
How do criminals steal your identity?
What can you do to prevent it?
Identity theft prevention doesn't require a huge effort on your part.  Just some simple techniques and some good old fashioned common sense.

  • Keep your mailbox locked so thieves can't steal your mail. Your mail may contain credit card bills that have your credit limit and card number on it.  Your mailbox could also give criminals access to utility bills, bank statements, and other documents with sensitive information.
  • Don't throw away these types of documents either.  Invest in a paper shredder to destroy documents with personal information before disposing of them.
  • When you're out shopping, beware of people "shoulder surfing".  Shoulder surfing refers to people looking over your shoulder when you have your credit card out.  Just about every cell phone these days has a camera built in, making it too easy for a thief to snap a picture and get your name and credit card number.
  • Never carry your social security card with you.  If a criminal gets a hold of your social security card they can get just about anything else they want in your name.  They can apply for credit, get a drivers license, even get a job.  Protecting your social security number is probably the most important thing to do for ID theft prevention.

These are just a few tips.  Protect your information and use your common sense.  If you have not watched the videos above
I would suggest you do so because they have some really good information for you.
