Phishing
What Is phishing?
Phishing

One way that identity thieves obtain their victims personal information is through a process known as phishing.  Many times phishing takes the form of an official looking email that asks you to click a link taking you to a page that will ask you to update account information.  The page will look like that of your bank or some other business or organization but in reality the page is a fake and any information you enter is recorded by the thieves.

If your bank ever needs any information from you they would never have you click a link in an email that takes you to a page asking for personal information.  If you needed to obtain some personal data they would have you type the URL into your internet browser and then log in to their site using your user name and password.

Another way that phishing can occur is through the use of malware, malicious software that can log every keystroke of your keyboard.  When you type in a password or other sensitive information the criminals have it.
